Training Courses
Backroom has always supported Training and Education. It is an important part of ensuring future safety and quality. We are very pleased to announce that our in house training course has now been granted PSA approval. Gareth Winterflood, our Inspection and Test consultant, originally wrote this to set to our work experience students.
The work experience program is an important part of children's education. We have a regular flow of students from our local schools and the thought of a certificate at the end of the two weeks would help the young people with their Record of Achievement, which is a very important document for today's school leavers.
- Work experience should be about real WORK.
- Young people want to learn.
- Open your Industry to them and help to ensure a sucessful future for all of us.
After we had set the course to one or two students, we decided that this could be useful to our own staff, so the content then was modified and improved. The PSA was initiating the project at Loughborough at this time and were looking for a module to complete the BTEC. Our course was assessed to be suitable for the task and integrated into the Production Technician BTEC, which was run at Loughborough College on behalf of the PSA.
During the Electrical days Laurence Dunnett, our Technical Director, assisted the principal lecturer Bill Egan. The students who took these BTEC courses represented a wide spectrum of activities and industries.
Electricity powers everything - not just rock n' roll.
We were always impressed by the candidates we met on the courses, people really want to learn new things and others like to brush up their knowledge from time to time.
Backroom currently offers "An Introduction To Cabling and Distribution" - this will provide the following:
Learning Outcomes
- To develop an understanding of how electrical energy is generated and measured.
- Develop an understanding of electrical safety provision and the performance of simple electrical tests.
- To gain an understanding of the variety of conductive cabling and connectors used in concert and event production
- To gain experience of safe cable management and maintenance technique
Assessment Criteria
At the end of this unit students shall be able to:
- Explain the concepts of Voltage, Current, Resistance, AC, DC and The Circuit.
- Identify SI Units of measurement including Volts, Amps, Ohms, Watts and Hertz, and the prefixes Milli-, Mega-, Kilo-
- Explain the common hazards associated with electricity
- Demonstrate practical electrical safety techniques
- Identify protective devices, including the Circuit Protective Conductor and describe their operation
- Perform basic electrical load calculations
- Safely perform mains and continuity tests, using appropriate test equipment
- Explain the role played by Portable Appliance Testing in electrical safety management
- Explain the difference between ‘mains’ and ‘signal’ cables and connectors.
- Identify appropriate cable and connector types for a variety of applications.
- Explain the importance of colour coding of cables and connections
- dentify cables according to colour coding conventions.
- Correctly wire 13, 15 and 16A connectors using appropriate hand tools.
- Demonstrate appropriate techniques for cable routing and layout to avoid trip hazard, cable damage, Inductance and interference.
- Demonstrate safe cable management including, packing, storage, cleaning and visual inspection
- Correctly identify and mark a variety of cables
- Correctly record test results and data.
